The panel almost nobody runs
Of the six Certificates of Analysis we hold, exactly one carries a pesticide screen. That ratio is not unusual for this industry — pesticide panels are the most expensive routine test on a supplement, and the one most easily left off without anyone noticing.
Here is ours in full, from the Mushroom Focus Strips, lot KJ112501:

One row. Nine words of specification. And most of the meaning is carried by a single one of them.
Why “specified” is the whole sentence
There is no test for “pesticides.” There is no instrument you point at a sample that returns clean in the general case.
What exists is a multi-residue panel: a defined list of compounds, and a method sensitive enough to detect each of them below a defined limit. The lab screens for the compounds on the list. A compound not on the list produces no signal, no flag, and no line on the report — not because it’s absent, but because nobody looked for it.
So “free from specified pesticides” is precisely accurate and structurally incomplete. It means: of the chemicals we screened for, none were found above the limit. The size and composition of that list is the actual finding, and our document doesn’t include it.
Panels in this category typically run from a few dozen compounds to a few hundred, and different reference lists exist — pharmacopoeial ones and regulatory residue lists among them. A 40-compound panel and a 400-compound panel both produce the word Complies. On the page, they look identical.
What to ask: how many compounds were on the panel, and against which reference list. A brand that can answer has a real screen. A brand that repeats the word “tested” has a word.
Why mushrooms inherit this from their substrate
Mushrooms aren’t sprayed the way a field crop is. The exposure route is indirect, and it’s the same mechanism that makes heavy metals a live question for fungi: the mushroom takes up what its growing medium contains.
Commercial mushroom substrate is largely agricultural material — straw, sawdust, grain, agricultural byproducts. Those inputs were grown as crops, on farms, under whatever regime that farm used. Residue that arrives in the substrate is available to the fungus growing through it.
This is why a pesticide screen on a mushroom product is a question about supply chain rather than about the grow room, and why a brand’s answer should be about inputs, not about their own facility being clean.
Two different mechanisms, and we have one of each
There are two credible ways to address this, and they are not substitutes.
Organic certification works upstream. It constrains what may be applied to the inputs and requires documentation through the chain. It is a statement about permitted practice, verified by audit — not a measurement of what ended up in the finished powder.
A residue screen works downstream. It measures the finished material. It is a statement about outcome, for one batch, limited to the compounds on the list.
Ideally a product has both. Ours have one each, on two different products, and neither on the other three:

There’s a neat symmetry there that we didn’t design and can’t take credit for: the product with the upstream control has no downstream measurement, and the product with the downstream measurement has no upstream control. Between the two of them you could assemble a complete answer. Neither one is a complete answer on its own, and three of our products have neither.
We’d rather print that table than describe our sourcing philosophy.
”Complies” versus a number, again
The same limitation that runs through the metals panel applies here, and more severely.
Complies is a verdict. It compresses an entire analytical run into one word, discards every measured value, and gives you nothing to compare against another brand’s Complies. Two products can both comply while one screened forty compounds and the other four hundred, and one detected trace residues below the limit while the other detected nothing at all.
For pathogen testing, a verdict is genuinely the right output — “Absent” is the answer. For a residue screen, a verdict is a summary of data that exists somewhere and wasn’t printed.
To be fair to the document: the rest of that COA reports real measured values for weight, moisture, disintegration and potency against label claim. The pesticide row is the one place it reverts to a word, and that’s a common convention rather than an evasion. It’s still less than it could be.
What we say about it
We do not present a pesticide claim as a brand attribute. One product in five has a screen, the screen’s compound list isn’t in our copy of the document, and a range-wide claim built on that would be exactly the kind of summary-level assertion this whole cluster argues against.
Per product: the Focus Strips have a passing screen on lot KJ112501, our Lion’s Mane is certified organic, and the other three have neither on their Certificates of Analysis. Batch COAs are available on request — send us the lot number from your bottle and you’ll get that lot’s document, including the parts that are thin.
Three questions
- Is there a pesticide row at all? For a mushroom product, this is a substrate question, and most COAs are silent on it.
- How many compounds, against which list? “Specified” is doing all the work. Ask what it specifies.
- Is the product organic, screened, or both? These control different halves of the problem. Neither one covers the other.
