Energy Blend — 300 mg. Under it, five ingredient names in a row. That’s the whole disclosure on most of the shelf, and it looks like information. It isn’t. It’s one number doing the work of five, and the four you’d most want are the four that aren’t there.
This page is the arithmetic that fixes it. It takes about ten seconds and it works on any panel, in any category, for the rest of your life. This is the energy-shelf version of how to read a mushroom supplement label — same method, narrower aisle.
The one rule that makes blends legal
A proprietary blend is not a loophole somebody found. It’s a disclosure format written into the labelling rules, and brands use it exactly as written. Understanding what the rule requires — and what it doesn’t — is the whole game.
What must be disclosed, and the single thing that may be omitted
On a Supplement Facts panel, a proprietary blend must give you three things:
- A name. “Energy Blend.” Marketing chose it. It means nothing.
- Every ingredient in it, by name. Nothing hides completely. If it’s in there, it’s printed.
- The total weight of the blend. One number, in milligrams per serving, covering everything under the heading.
And the ingredients must be listed in descending order of predominance by weight — most first, least last.
That’s it. The single thing a brand may omit is the milligrams of each individual ingredient. One omission. It happens to be the only number that tells you whether the product is what the front of the jar says it is.
So the order is real information — it’s just very low-resolution information. It tells you which ingredient is biggest. It cannot tell you how much bigger. And “how much bigger” is where the entire difference lives.
The descending-order demonstration
Here’s the proof, in two panels. Same five ingredients. Same 300 mg total. Same descending order. Two completely different products.
Formula A: 290 / 2.5 / 2.5 / 2.5 / 2.5
What’s actually in the jar:

Formula A is one ingredient plus a rounding error. Four of the five names on that panel exist to be names.
Formula B: 60 / 60 / 60 / 60 / 60

Formula B is an even five-way split. Whatever you think of that as a formulation choice, it is a genuinely different product from Formula A — a different amount of every single ingredient in it.
Both print identically. That’s not a loophole — that’s the rule working as written.
Now put each one behind a proprietary blend. Here is Formula A’s panel:

Those aren’t similar. They’re identical — character for character. Same blend name, same total, same five ingredients, same descending order (290 > 2.5 = 2.5 = 2.5 = 2.5, and 60 = 60 = 60 = 60 = 60; both are valid descending orders). Both panels are fully compliant. Neither brand did anything wrong.
Which is the point. Nobody is breaking a rule. The rule permits a 116× difference in the lead ingredient to render as the same line of text — and there is no way, from the panel alone, to tell which jar you’re holding.
”Pixie dusting” — the industry’s own term for Formula A
Formula A has a name, and the supplement industry coined it, not its critics: pixie dusting. A pinch of an ingredient — enough to legally print it on the panel, nowhere near enough to matter — sprinkled in so the name can appear. The adjacent term is label dressing: the ingredient is on the label to dress it up.
It’s a formulating decision, and a rational one when the panel can’t distinguish it from the alternative. If a name costs 2.5 mg to print and a real inclusion costs 60 mg, and the customer sees the same panel either way, the finance department has an opinion about which to pick.
The ten-second shelf check
Four steps. You can run this in a store aisle holding a phone in your other hand.
Step 1 — is there a blend total, or per-ingredient numbers?
Look for a bolded name with one milligram figure and a list of ingredients under it. That’s a blend, and it’s a single number. Per-ingredient labelling gives every ingredient its own mg on its own line. If you see the second thing, most of this article doesn’t apply to you and you can go straight to Step 4.
Step 2 — if there are per-ingredient numbers, add them up
Literally add them. Phone calculator. Some panels do both — they name a blend total and break out some ingredients. Sum what’s broken out.
Step 3 — if they don’t reconcile to the blend total, you’ve learned something
If the broken-out ingredients sum to 300 mg and the blend total says 300 mg, the arithmetic closes and there’s nothing hidden. If they sum to 90 mg under a 400 mg blend total, then 310 mg of that blend is unallocated and you have no idea where it went. That gap is the disclosure. Its size is how much of the product you’re being asked to take on trust.
Step 4 — which ingredient is cheapest to source? It’s almost certainly first.
Descending order is the one signal you’re given, so use it. Search two or three of the ingredient names with the word “bulk” and glance at the price per kilo. When the ingredient at the top of the list is also the cheapest one on it, you have learned roughly what the blend is: mostly the inexpensive thing, garnished with the expensive things whose names sold you.
That check isn’t proof. It’s a prior. It’s still better than the panel gave you.
What “tested” means, and what it doesn’t
Once the arithmetic is done, “tested” is the next word doing more work than it earned.
A COA covers identity, microbiology, sometimes potency, sometimes heavy metals — different panels
A Certificate of Analysis is not one document with one meaning. It’s a report on whichever panels were run. An identity panel confirms the ingredient is the species it says. A microbiological panel checks for yeast, mould, and bacteria. A potency panel measures actual content against the label claim. A heavy metals panel screens lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury. A COA can carry any combination. Only the potency panel speaks to the number on the front of the jar.
”Tested” alone is not a claim. Ask which panel.
So when a brand says “tested,” the useful reply is: tested for what? A microbiological pass is real and worth having, and it says nothing whatsoever about whether the blend contains what the panel implies. Two products can both be truthfully “tested” and be telling you about entirely different things.

The format also caps the dose: capsule, powder, gummy or strip
One more thing the panel won’t volunteer: physics limits what could have fit in there at all. A gummy holds less than a capsule; a capsule holds less than a scoop of powder. Before you judge a blend total, it’s worth knowing that format changes the dose ceiling — sometimes by an order of magnitude.
The same arithmetic on the evening shelf
None of this is specific to energy. Walk twenty feet to the sleep and stress section and you’ll find the same panel with a different noun on it — “Calm Blend, 300 mg,” five names, one number. Step 1: per-ingredient numbers, no blend. Step 2: 200 + 25 + 25 + 25 + 25. Step 3: 300 mg, and there’s no blend total to reconcile against — nothing is unallocated, because nothing is pooled. Step 4: the biggest ingredient is Cordyceps, the one on the front of the jar. It’s 200 of the 300.
That’s the honest end of it, and here’s the other honest end: this doesn’t make the gummy work. Every one of those five is below the amounts used in published research on the ingredients, and no trial exists on this finished formula, so we make no promise about what it does for you. Cordyceps has been studied for exercise performance — that’s a fact about the ingredient, not a claim about our product, and the distinction is the whole reason this page exists.
