What a proprietary blend is, in one paragraph
A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients that a brand is allowed to report as a single number. The Supplement Facts panel lists the blend’s name, the blend’s total weight in milligrams per serving, and then the names of everything inside it — but not how much of each. “Calm Blend — 300 mg” followed by five botanicals means you know the sum. You do not know a single one of the five addends. That is the entire trick, and it is not a loophole someone found. It is written into the rules.
One number, many ingredients — and it’s entirely legal
Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act and the labeling regulations that followed it, a manufacturer may declare a blend’s total quantity instead of the quantity of each component. The stated reason is trade secrecy: a formula is a recipe, and printing the ratio hands it to a competitor.
That reason is real. It is also the most useful disclosure exemption in the industry, because a formula’s ratio is exactly what determines whether the formula is worth anything. Notice what’s protected and what isn’t: the brand’s recipe is protected, and your ability to evaluate the purchase is what gets traded away for it. If you’ve ever felt like a label was technically answering your question while dodging it, you were reading the situation correctly. The panel is compliant. It’s just not informative.
Descending order tells you the ranking, never the ratio
There’s one crumb of information inside a blend, and it’s worth knowing precisely because people over-read it. Ingredients inside a proprietary blend must be listed in descending order of predominance — most by weight first, least by weight last.
So on a 300 mg blend reading reishi, lemon balm, passion flower, L-theanine, valerian root, you know reishi is the largest component and valerian is the smallest. That’s it. That’s the whole yield.
What you don’t know is the gap. Descending order is consistent with reishi at 296 mg and four ingredients at 1 mg each. It is equally consistent with 60 mg of each. Both are truthfully labeled. Both are “300 mg.” An ordering tells you the ranking of five numbers; it tells you nothing about the distance between them, and the distance is the product. The five botanicals usually inside one
A note before the list. The best plain-English writing on what these ingredients do is at Examine.com, which reads the studies, has no product to sell you, and is independent — which is precisely why it’s worth trusting, and why we’re pointing you there rather than paraphrasing it back at you with a buy button underneath. What follows is identification, not persuasion.
Reishi — the traditional-use record, and what research exists
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a shelf-shaped, lacquered-looking fungus that grows on hardwood. It has a documented history of use in East Asian herbal traditions going back roughly two thousand years, typically decocted as a bitter tea rather than eaten — it’s too woody to chew. It’s commonly grouped with the adaptogens, a category term rather than a regulatory one.
On labels it appears as a botanical extract, and what matters is the extract ratio (10:1, 8:1) and whether it came from the fruiting body or the mycelium. Many labels, including ours, don’t say.
L-Theanine — the amino acid in tea, the most-studied item on most calm labels
L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in green tea leaves, and on most calm labels it’s the item with the largest human research base behind it — generally examined at doses in the 100–200 mg range. It’s also the only non-botanical of the five: it’s typically produced by fermentation rather than pulled out of tea leaves, because extracting it from tea at scale is impractical.
Lemon Balm — long documented history of use
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a lemon-scented member of the mint family, cultivated in Europe for centuries and documented in Western herbal texts since at least the Middle Ages. It grows easily and abundantly — worth filing away for the arithmetic below. On labels it appears as leaf powder or as an extract, and those are very different things at the same milligram number.
Passion Flower — where it comes from, what’s been examined
Passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing vine native to the southeastern United States, named by Spanish missionaries who read the structure of its flower as a depiction of the Passion. It has a long traditional-use record in the Americas and appears in European herbal monographs. Research on it exists, and is considerably thinner than the research on L-theanine.
Valerian Root — one of the most-researched botanicals in the category
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a root with a documented history of use stretching back to Greek and Roman texts, and it is among the most-researched botanicals in this whole category — it has been examined in humans repeatedly, generally at doses in the hundreds of milligrams. It also smells genuinely awful, which is why it’s nearly always encapsulated or sweetened rather than sold as a tea.
Why the ratio is the whole game
300 mg can be 290 of the cheapest and 2.5 of each of the rest
Take the blend seriously as arithmetic. Five ingredients, 300 mg total, descending order. Here are two formulas that print identically on a panel:

Both are legal. Both say “Calm Blend — 300 mg.” One of them is four ingredients present in a quantity best described as a rumor — enough to print the name on the front of the jar, not enough to be anything else. The industry term for this is fairy dusting, and the proprietary blend is the mechanism that makes it invisible.
Which of the five is cheapest to source — and what that predicts
We’re not going to print a price-per-kilogram table we haven’t verified, so take this as directional reasoning, not sourced data: dried herb powders — lemon balm, passion flower, valerian root — are commodity crops that grow readily and cost the least per gram. A concentrated extract at a stated ratio costs more, because you’re paying for the raw material that got boiled down. Isolated L-theanine is a manufactured ingredient with its own production cost.
The prediction is simple enough to check yourself. When a blend is fairy dusted, the fairy dust lands on whatever is expensive and impressive on the front of the jar, and the bulk goes to whatever is cheap and heavy. So a blend led by a cheap leaf powder, with the marquee ingredient buried at position four, is telling you something — quietly, in the only language the panel permits.
The same arithmetic, on the energy shelf

What to do at the shelf
If the amounts aren’t printed, you cannot evaluate the product. Full stop.
This is the part most articles soften. We won’t. If a label gives you a blend total and not the per-ingredient milligrams, there is no analysis available to you. Not a hard analysis — none. You cannot compare it to another product, you cannot compare it to the research on the ingredients, and you cannot tell a generous formula from a fairy-dusted one, because both print the same panel.
You can still buy it. People buy things on trust, on taste, on a friend’s say-so. That’s allowed. Just be clear that you’re buying on trust and not on evidence, because the evidence was withheld before you ever picked up the jar.
Three questions worth emailing a brand
If you like a product that uses a blend, ask. The answers, and the willingness to answer, are the information.
- What is the milligram amount of each ingredient in the blend? Any brand can answer this. It knows the number. The only question is whether it will tell you.
- Can you send me the Certificate of Analysis for the batch I’d receive? “We test everything” is a sentence. A COA is a document, for a specific production run. Ask what it covers, too — identity and microbiological testing is a different thing from a contaminant panel, and a brand that knows the difference will say which it has.
- Fruiting body or mycelium, and what extract ratio? For any mushroom ingredient, this determines what you actually bought. If the label doesn’t say and the brand won’t either, you’ve learned something.

That’s the same 300 mg as the hypothetical above, with the ratio printed instead of hidden. Which lets you do the thing this whole page has been arguing for — and it cuts against us.
Compare those numbers to the doses in the ingredient research described earlier. They’re below it. The 25 mg of L-theanine here is well under the 100–200 mg range that research generally used, and the same gap applies to the botanicals. There is also no trial on this finished formula, at these amounts, in this combination — so we make no claim about what it does for you, and we’d tell you to be skeptical of anyone selling a similar product who does.
