Two bottles sit next to each other. Same shelf, same price, same mushroom named on the front in the same friendly font. One of them is mostly rice.
Nothing on the front will tell you which. That’s not a scandal and nobody is breaking the law — it’s just how supplement labelling works, and once you know the six places to look, the two bottles stop looking alike within about a minute.
This is the guide to those six places. At the end, we run our own labels through all six and publish where we fail, because a transparency guide that only flatters the brand that wrote it isn’t a guide, it’s an ad with footnotes.
Start at the back: the panel is the only regulated part
The front of a supplement bottle is marketing. It can carry a photograph of a mushroom the product barely contains. It can say “premium,” “advanced,” “clinical-grade,” “potent,” “full-spectrum” — words with no fixed legal meaning in this category. None of that is a lie, exactly. It’s just not information.
The Supplement Facts panel on the back is different. Its format, contents, and ordering are prescribed. It is the only part of the package that is obliged to tell you specific things in a specific way — and, more usefully, the only part whose silences are meaningful. When a panel doesn’t say something, that omission is itself a fact.
What the panel must disclose
Serving size. Servings per container. Each dietary ingredient, by name. The amount per serving of each one — unless those ingredients are grouped into a proprietary blend, which brings us straight to Check 1.
What it may legally omit
More than you’d expect: the individual amounts inside a blend, which part of the mushroom was used, what species it actually is, whether any active fraction was measured, and what testing the batch did or didn’t receive. Six categories of silence. Each one is a check.
Check 1 — Is there a proprietary blend?
Look for a line like “Focus Blend — 500 mg” with several ingredients listed underneath it and no numbers beside them.
That’s a proprietary blend. It’s legal, it’s common, and it’s the single biggest obstacle to evaluating a product.
One number for five ingredients tells you almost nothing
“500 mg” is the total. It could be 100 mg of each of five ingredients. It could be 480 mg of the cheapest one and 5 mg of each of the other four. Both formulas print the same three characters on the panel. You cannot distinguish them, and the manufacturer knows you cannot.
The descending-order trick
Ingredients inside a blend must be listed in descending order of predominance. This sounds like a protection. It gives you the ranking and never the ratio — you learn which ingredient there’s most of, and nothing whatsoever about how much more of it there is.

Same line. Same order. Wildly different products, at wildly different costs to make. The industry has a name for Formula A — pixie dusting — which tells you it’s common enough to have earned one.

The check: if the amounts aren’t printed, you cannot evaluate the product. Not “it’s probably fine” — you cannot evaluate it. That’s the whole finding.
Check 2 — Does it name the species?
“Mushroom powder” is a category, not an ingredient. “Reishi” is a common name that covers several distinct organisms. The tell is the Latin binomial.
Hericium erinaceus is lion’s mane. Ganoderma lucidum is reishi. Cordyceps militaris is the cultivated cordyceps most supplements actually use, and it is not the same organism as Ophiocordyceps sinensis, the wild one most of the romantic marketing copy is about.
A label that names the binomial is telling you it knows what it bought. A label that says “Mushroom Blend (Reishi, Chaga, Maitake)” is telling you considerably less than it appears to.
Check 3 — Does it say which part of the mushroom?
This is the big one. If you only make one check, make this one.
A mushroom supplement can be made from the fruiting body (the visible mushroom), the mycelium (the root-like network it grows from), or mycelium grown on grain — where the mycelium is cultivated on a bed of rice or oats and the whole mass, grain included, is dried and milled together.
All three can legally say “Lion’s Mane” on the front. Only one of them is mostly mushroom.
The third is where the rice comes in. The grain isn’t a contaminant or a cheat — it’s the growing medium, and separating it out is difficult and expensive. So often it simply isn’t separated, and it counts toward the weight on your label. “Lion’s Mane 500 mg” can mean 500 mg of milled fruiting body or 500 mg of mostly-starch.
Most labels don’t say which. That silence is Check 3, and it’s the most consequential silence on the panel. The full version, including how to spot it at the shelf: fruiting body vs mycelium.
Check 4 — Is it standardized, and to what?
Here’s the part that turns a milligram into information.
Standardization means the manufacturer measures a specific fraction of the material and holds it to a stated minimum, batch after batch. A label reading “400 mg, standardized to 40% polysaccharides” is committing to something testable. A label reading “400 mg” is telling you the weight of some powder.
Why a milligram without a spec is just a weight
Mushrooms vary. Harvest, strain, growing conditions, and extraction method all move the active fraction around substantially. Without a standardization spec, “400 mg” this year and “400 mg” next year can be materially different products at identical label weights, and neither label is lying.
Polysaccharides vs beta-glucans
Worth knowing, because it’s where the standardization number can quietly lose its meaning.
Beta-glucans are the fraction most of the mushroom research concerns. Polysaccharides are a broader category — and starch is a polysaccharide. Which means a mycelium-on-grain product can post a respectable “polysaccharide” percentage on the strength of the rice it grew on. A beta-glucan spec is the more meaningful number, and it’s rarer precisely because it’s harder to hit.
So Check 4 is really two questions: is there a spec at all, and is it a spec that can be gamed by the substrate?
Check 5 — What does the paperwork actually cover?
“Tested” is not a claim. It’s an adjective doing the work of a sentence.
A Certificate of Analysis is not one thing
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a batch document, and different COAs cover completely different panels:
- Identity — is this actually the species it says?
- Microbiological — yeast, mould, bacteria within limits?
- Potency — does the active fraction match the label claim?
- Heavy metals — lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury within limits?
A batch can have a COA covering identity and microbiology and no potency data and no heavy metals panel whatsoever. That batch has “a COA.” A brand saying “tested” about it is saying something technically true and practically empty.
The question isn’t “is it tested.” It’s “which panel, and can I see it?” Any brand that can’t answer the second half has answered it.
FDA-registered facility is not FDA approval
This one’s worth being blunt about, including about ourselves.
A facility that manufactures supplements registers with the FDA. That registration is a requirement, not an endorsement — it means the agency knows the facility exists. It involves no testing of the product, no review of the formula, and no approval of anything.
No dietary supplement is approved by the FDA. Not ours, not anyone’s — the category doesn’t work that way. Any label implying otherwise is telling you something that cannot be true. “Made in an FDA-registered facility” is a real and honest thing to say, and it is a much smaller thing than it sounds.
Country of origin is per-product
Not per-brand. A brand with five products can manufacture them in five countries, and a site-wide US-origin badge only has to be wrong about one of them to be false. Origin is stated per product — check it there, not in the footer.
Check 6 — Does the format match your life?
The best formula in the world does nothing from inside a cupboard.
Capsules need water and a free hand. Powders need a shaker and a sink. Gummies have a sugar and dose-ceiling trade-off. Oral films carry the least active of any format — and dissolve on your tongue in a car. Every format trades something, and the honest answer to “which is best” is “the one you’ll still be using in six weeks.”

The 60-second version
At the shelf, in order:
- Blend? If the mg aren’t printed, stop. You can’t evaluate it.
- Species? Latin binomial, or it’s a category not an ingredient.
- Which part? Fruiting body, mycelium, or grain — if it doesn’t say, that’s your answer.
- Standardized? To what fraction, and can the substrate fake it?
- Which panel? “Tested” is not a claim. Ask which one.
- Format? Will this still be open on day 40?
Six questions. Most labels fail at question one, which is efficient.
How our own labels answer these six
Here’s where we’d normally show you a table where we score well. Instead here’s the actual state of it, including the parts that don’t help us.
Check 1 — blends. We pass, and it’s the thing we’re proudest of. Every active in every product is printed with its own milligram figure. There is no proprietary blend anywhere in the lineup. Our Mushroom Energy & Cognition Drops print Cordyceps 100 mg, Lion’s Mane 100 mg, Alpha GPC 25 mg, L-Tyrosine 25 mg, and Vitamin B12 500 mcg. Add them up — that’s the formula, all of it.
Check 2 — species. Partial. Our Lion’s Mane Capsules name Hericium erinaceus on the label. Several of our other labels use common names only. That’s a gap, and it’s the supplier’s label, which is an explanation and not an excuse.
Check 3 — which part. Mixed, and this is the honest one. Our Lion’s Mane Capsules state organic fruiting body & mycelium powder — both, printed. Most labels won’t tell you at all, so stating it is genuinely better than the shelf average, and it is not the same as being fruiting-body-only. Our other SKUs’ labels don’t state the part. We can’t tell you what we haven’t been told.
Check 4 — standardization. One product, one spec. The Lion’s Mane Capsules are standardized to 40% polysaccharides at 1000 mg per 2-capsule serving — so about 400 mg of polysaccharides. Note what we just told you in Check 4: polysaccharides is the broader, weaker fraction. A beta-glucan spec would be a better number. We don’t have one. Now you know to ask.
Check 5 — paperwork. This is where we score worst, so here it is in full. We say “made in an FDA-registered facility” and nothing more, because nothing more is true across the lineup. Batch Certificates of Analysis are available on request — email us and we’ll send yours. We publish none of them on this site, so please don’t read “available on request” as more than it is. Some of our COAs cover identity and microbiology only, with no potency data and no heavy metals panel. Two of our five products carry more testing than the other three. We’re not going to name the winners here, because a site-wide page that quietly advertises the good SKUs is doing the same trick as the brands in Check 5 — the difference between our best-documented product and our least is a per-product question, and it’s answered on each product’s own page.
Check 6 — format. Drops, gummies, capsules, and films, because different people abandon different formats. Our Mushroom Focus Strips are made in India; the other four are manufactured in the United States. That’s exactly the per-product origin question from Check 5, and it’s why you’ll never see a blanket US-origin badge in our footer — it would be false for one of five, and a site-wide badge can only carry what survives the weakest product.
And the biggest one, which isn’t a check at all: every mushroom and botanical in this lineup is dosed below the amounts used in the human trials you’ll find when you go and read about the ingredients. Not slightly below — multiples below. There is no clinical trial on any of our finished formulas. So we don’t tell you what our products will do for you, or when. We tell you exactly what’s in them, in milligrams, and we point you at the research on the ingredients so you can reach your own conclusion.
That’s the whole offer. It’s less than most brands promise you. It’s also all any of them can honestly say.
