The three things sold as “Lion’s Mane”
Three bottles sit on the same shelf. Same species on the front, same photograph of a shaggy white mushroom, same price bracket. One of them is mostly rice.
That isn’t a manufacturing accident and it isn’t illegal. It’s a labeling convention working exactly as built. The phrase “Lion’s Mane” names an organism, and an organism has parts — but a supplement panel is not required to tell you which part it milled. So three genuinely different ingredients arrive under one name.
Fruiting body — the visible mushroom
The fruiting body is the mushroom you’d recognize: the white, cascading, icicle-like growth of Hericium erinaceus. It’s what a forager cuts, what a chef cooks, and what the large majority of published Lion’s Mane research has used.
It’s also the part that carries the beta-glucans — the specific class of polysaccharides that people are actually thinking of when they read “polysaccharides” on a panel.
Mycelium — the root network
Mycelium is the vegetative body of the same fungus: a fine white web of threads that lives in the substrate and eventually pushes up a fruiting body. It is not a fake, and it is not a filler. It’s the same organism at a different stage, and it produces its own distinct compounds — erinacines are concentrated in mycelium, not in the fruiting body, and they’re a real subject of research.
Grown in liquid fermentation and separated from its growth medium, mycelium biomass is a legitimate mushroom ingredient. That product exists. It is rarely what’s in the bottle you’re holding, because it’s expensive.
Mycelium on grain — and why the grain is in your capsule
The cheap way to grow mycelium is on grain. Sterilize a bag of rice or oats, inoculate it, let the mycelium colonize the block over a few weeks, then dry the whole thing and mill it. The industry name is myceliated grain, or “mycelium on grain” — MOG.
The grain is not removed at the end. It can’t be. The mycelium has grown through it; there’s no sieve that separates a thread from the kernel it’s fused to. So the grain goes in the capsule with everything else, and it is counted, sold, and shipped to you as Lion’s Mane.
Why the grain matters more than anything else on the label
The substrate is milled in, and it counts toward the weight you paid for
This is the whole point, so it’s worth stating without any hedging: 500 mg of myceliated grain is not 500 mg of mushroom. The number on the panel is the weight of the milled block, and the block is mycelium plus its rice.
The exact split depends on the grow, and we’re not going to invent a percentage for you. But the direction isn’t in dispute anywhere in this industry, including among the people selling MOG: the grain is the bulk of the mass and the mycelium is the minority of it. When you compare that 500 mg against a 500 mg of fruiting body powder from the bottle beside it, you are not comparing like with like — you’re comparing a mushroom to a starch block with a mushroom grown into it.
Starch vs beta-glucans: what a polysaccharide number can quietly include
Here’s the part that catches careful readers, because it looks like rigor.
“Polysaccharide” is a category, not a compound. Beta-glucans are polysaccharides — those are the fungal ones. But starch is also a polysaccharide, and it’s an alpha-glucan. Rice is mostly starch.
So a big polysaccharide percentage on a myceliated-grain product can be measuring, in part, the rice. The number is not a lie. It’s just answering a broader question than the one you asked.
The tighter measurement is beta-glucans specifically, by an enzymatic assay, reported separately from alpha-glucans — that split is exactly what tells you how much is fungus and how much is substrate. A label that gives you a polysaccharide figure and no beta-glucan figure has told you less than it appears to. That includes ours. We’ll come back to that.
Why “Lion’s Mane 500 mg” can legally mean any of the three
Three products — fruiting body powder, clean mycelium biomass, and a milled brick of colonized rice — can each ship under the words “Lion’s Mane 500 mg.” The part used simply doesn’t have to appear in a way anyone enforces, and if a brand chooses not to name it, nothing stops the bottle.
That’s the mechanism. Not fraud, not a loophole someone is exploiting in the dark — a default. And defaults favor whoever benefits from the ambiguity.
Where the research actually sits
Most published work is on the fruiting body
Lion’s Mane has been studied for cognition. The bulk of that work — the human trial people cite most often, and the compound isolation behind it — used fruiting body material or extracts of it. Hericenones, the compounds that come up in those discussions, are fruiting body compounds.
So when a mycelium-on-grain product borrows the reputation of “the studies on Lion’s Mane,” it’s borrowing studies run on a different part of the organism.
What that does and doesn’t let you conclude about a mycelium product
It does not let you conclude mycelium is inert or worthless. That would be an overcorrection, and it’s wrong. Erinacines are a mycelium story and they’re studied on their own terms. Anyone telling you mycelium is simply a scam is selling you something too.
What it lets you conclude is narrower and more useful: research on the fruiting body is not evidence for a myceliated-grain product. The parts differ in composition. Sharing a Latin name isn’t sharing a data set. And a starch-heavy MOG powder isn’t the same thing as clean mycelium biomass either — collapsing those two is its own error.
One more honest note. Real Mushrooms and Nootropics Depot have been making this argument for years, and they make it with something we don’t have: their own beta-glucan and alpha-glucan assay data on real products, published. If you want this topic with the numbers attached, go read them. We’re not going to pretend to out-science people who ran the tests. What we can do is hand you the procedure and then apply it to our own bottle, including where it doesn’t flatter us.
How to tell which one you’re holding
Ten seconds at the shelf. In order:
Look for the Latin binomial
Hericium erinaceus should be printed, in italics, next to the common name. Its absence doesn’t prove anything is wrong, but its presence is the cheapest possible signal that someone in the supply chain cared about identity. A brand that won’t spend two words on the species name is telling you where the attention went.
Look for the part — if it isn’t stated, that’s the answer
Look for the words “fruiting body,” “mycelium,” or both. Not in the marketing copy on the front — in the Supplement Facts panel, in the ingredient line.
If the part isn’t named, you have your answer. Fruiting body costs more to produce, so a brand using it says so; it’s the reason to charge more. Silence is not a coin flip. An unstated part is a stated part that nobody wanted to state.
Look for standardization, and to what
“Standardized to 40% polysaccharides” and “standardized to 25% beta-glucans” are different sentences, and the second one is doing more work. Beta-glucans are the fungal fraction. Polysaccharides is the umbrella that starch also fits under. Read which word is there.
Also read the extract ratio if there is one (8:1, 10:1) and whether the process is named — hot water extraction pulls polysaccharides; dual extraction adds alcohol for the compounds water leaves behind. No ratio and no process usually means plain milled powder, which is fine, as long as it’s priced like plain milled powder.
The blend problem compounds all of this
Everything above assumes you can see a single ingredient and a single number. In a multi-mushroom formula you often can’t, because proprietary blends hide the dose — one combined milligram figure for six ingredients, with the order of the list as your only clue. A blend that also doesn’t declare parts is two unknowns stacked. The same reading habits apply across the whole panel; that’s what how to read a mushroom supplement label walks through.

Run the checklist:
- Binomial? Yes. Hericium erinaceus, on the label.
- Part stated? Yes — and it’s both. Fruiting body and mycelium. Not fruiting body only. If you came into this article hoping we’d sell you the pure thing this page argues is better-researched, we’re not going to let you believe that. Ours is a blend of both parts, the label says so, and most labels on this shelf don’t say anything at all.
- Standardized to what? Polysaccharides, at 40%. Not beta-glucans. Per everything above, that’s the broader number — and we’re the ones who just told you the broader number is the weaker one. We’d publish a beta-glucan split if we had one. We don’t.
- What we won’t claim. We won’t tell you what these capsules will do for you. There’s no trial on this finished formula, and 1000 mg is still below the doses used in the published Lion’s Mane work — and that work was mixed to null anyway. Every ingredient-level thing above is about the ingredient, not a promise about our product. Anyone making you a promise at this dose is making it up.

That’s the honest scorecard. Two of those lines are not a sales pitch. Which is roughly the point: you now have a procedure that works on any bottle, ours included, and you just watched it find something on ours.
