The short answer: human studies of lion’s mane have used about 1 to 3.2 grams a day of powder or extract, usually taken daily for four to sixteen weeks. There is no official recommended dose. The number on your bottle only compares to those studies once you know which part of the mushroom it is, whether it’s an extract, and what any percentage actually measures.
If you searched for a lion’s mane dosage per day, you have probably already seen “500 to 3,000 mg” repeated across a dozen pages. That range isn’t wrong so much as unanchored. It mixes plain powder with concentrated extract, fruiting body with mycelium, and the grams a study used with the milligrams a label prints.

What is lion’s mane?
Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom that grows on dead hardwood and hangs in long white spines. It has a long history as a food and in traditional Chinese herbal practice. The NIH’s LiverTox database lists its constituents as including hericenones, erinacines, beta-polysaccharides and phenolic acids.
A supplement can be made from the fruiting body (the visible mushroom), the mycelium (the root-like network), mycelium grown on grain, or a mix. Those are different ingredients sold under one name, and it matters for dose. We cover it in depth in fruiting body vs. mycelium.
What doses have human studies used?
These are the trials worth knowing, with the preparation and amount each one used. Every row links to the study record.

A few honest notes on reading that table:
- The doses are in grams. The multi-week trials used 1.8 to 3.2 grams a day. A 500 mg capsule is a fraction of that.
- The 2009 trial enrolled people diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. It tells you what dose was used and tolerated over 16 weeks. It isn’t evidence about healthy adults.
- The results are small and mixed. The 2025 single-dose trial found no significant overall effect on composite cognition or mood scores. In the 28-day trial, the change in subjective stress only approached significance (p = 0.051), alongside null findings. That’s the state of the ingredient research, and it’s worth knowing before buying any lion’s mane product, ours included.
- Preparations aren’t interchangeable. The 2025 authors describe their 3 g of 10:1 extract as equivalent to 30 grams of fresh fruiting body. The 2019 trial’s 3.2 g was plain powder. Same number of grams, very different amounts of mushroom behind them.
Lion’s mane dosage by form
“Capsule” isn’t a form. It’s a container. What matters is what’s inside it and what the milligram figure is weighing.

Lion’s mane dosage per day: a decision rule instead of a shrug
“There is no standard dosage” is true and useless on its own. Here’s a rule you can actually apply to a bottle.
- Start from the label’s directions and don’t exceed them. A label’s suggested use is the dose the product was formulated and labeled for. More capsules is not a shortcut to a study result.
- Convert to a per-day figure. If a serving is two capsules and the directions say once daily, the per-day figure is the per-serving number. If it’s one strip a day, it’s one strip.
- Identify the form. Powder, extract with ratio, mycelium on grain, or a mix. If the part isn’t named, treat the number as unknown rather than best case.
- Compare only like with like. Plain fruiting body powder can be set against the 3 to 3.2 g a day of powder in the 12- and 16-week trials. An extract or a mycelium product can’t.
- Expect the studies to have been daily and sustained. The multi-week trials dosed every day, once (with breakfast, in 2023) or split three times a day (in 2009).
How much lion’s mane is too much? Safety and interactions
There is no established upper limit, and there isn’t much formal safety research to set one. Here is what the authoritative sources actually say.
General tolerance. According to LiverTox, lion’s mane hasn’t been through prospective safety trials but is widely described as well tolerated. In longer clinical trials, mild digestive complaints (abdominal discomfort, nausea or diarrhea) were reported, usually in fewer than 10% of participants. LiverTox rates it an unlikely cause of clinically apparent liver injury. In the 16-week, 3 g a day 2009 trial, laboratory tests showed no adverse effect.
Allergy. LiverTox notes at least one described case of an acute hypersensitivity reaction. Memorial Sloan Kettering lists abdominal discomfort, nausea and skin rash as reported in a clinical study. WebMD says serious allergic reactions are possible and that people allergic to molds or mushrooms may be at higher risk. Stop and get medical help if you have trouble breathing, swelling or hives.
Diabetes medication. In a 2013 study in rats, a water extract of lion’s mane lowered blood glucose. That hasn’t been shown in people, but if you take medication that lowers blood sugar, talk to your doctor before adding lion’s mane.
Blood thinners. In a 2010 lab study, hericenone B, a compound isolated from lion’s mane, inhibited collagen-induced platelet aggregation in rabbit and human platelets. Again, not a human finding, but if you take an anticoagulant or antiplatelet drug, talk to your doctor first.
Other medications. WebMD says interactions with medications are poorly understood and advises checking with a provider before combining lion’s mane with any medicine, and first if you have asthma, kidney problems or liver problems. Memorial Sloan Kettering also recommends talking with your healthcare providers before taking lion’s mane supplements.
Pregnancy and nursing. WebMD says it isn’t known whether lion’s mane could affect a pregnancy or pass into breast milk. If you’re pregnant or nursing, or under 18, check with your doctor before using it. Our own product pages say the same.
The catch nobody prints: 1,000 mg on the label isn’t 1,000 mg of actives

Walking our own label through it
Flow’s Lion’s Mane capsules come as 60 capsules, 30 servings. The directions are two capsules daily. So the per-day figure is straightforward: 1,000 mg of organic lion’s mane powder.
Then the two-step markdown. First, that 1,000 mg is fruiting body and mycelium, and the label doesn’t say in what proportion. So it isn’t the same material as the 3.2 g of powdered fruiting body in the 12-week trial, and we won’t pretend it is. Second, the “40% polysaccharides” works out to 400 mg of total polysaccharides. Our batch Certificate of Analysis for lot 2023-13956 measured 401.78 mg against that 400 mg claim, and it’s published in full. But polysaccharides are not beta-glucans, and we don’t have a beta-glucan figure. That’s where our label stops, and a label that gives a beta-glucan split would be telling you more than ours does. Put next to the table above, 1,000 mg a day is below the 1.8 to 3.2 g a day used in the multi-week trials, in a different preparation. There’s no trial on our finished product. Does lion’s mane work, and how long until you feel it?
Lion’s mane has been studied in small human trials for attention, mental processing, stress and mood, and the honest summary is: promising in places, mixed overall, and too small to settle anything. The single-dose trials looked at effects within one to two hours. The longer trials ran 28 days, 12 weeks and 16 weeks of daily use.
