Label Check asks five questions about a mushroom supplement you already own, from any brand. Here is what each question looks for on the Supplement Facts panel and what your answer tells you.
Look at the ingredients line on the Supplement Facts panel. “Fruiting body” is the mushroom itself. “Mycelium” is the root-like network, and “myceliated grain” means mycelium grown on rice or oats and milled together with that grain, so part of the powder is grain. A label that names only the mushroom (“Lion’s Mane 1,000 mg”) doesn’t tell you which you’re buying.
Fruiting body, mycelium, or grain? →Beta-glucans are a specific, measured compound. “Polysaccharides” is a wider group that can include starch from grain, so a polysaccharide percentage can look high without saying how much beta-glucan is present. A printed beta-glucan percentage is the more specific disclosure; a polysaccharide percentage is not the same number.
How to read a mushroom supplement label →An extract concentrates compounds from the mushroom, and a good label states the ratio or method (for example “8:1” or “hot water extract”). Raw or whole powder is the dried mushroom, milled. Neither is automatically better, but a label that says nothing either way leaves you unable to compare milligrams between two bottles.
Capsule, powder, gummy or strip? →When every mushroom has its own milligram amount, you can see exactly what one serving contains. A single number for a “proprietary blend” is legal, but it hides how that total is split, so one ingredient could make up almost all of it.
How to read an energy blend →A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the lab report for one production lot. Check which tests it covers: microbiology, identity, potency, heavy metals or pesticides. A COA speaks only for that lot and those tests. If a brand won’t share one when you ask, that is an answer too.
